SAGEA is a research-first artificial intelligence company. Our goal is to advance digital intelligence in the way that is most likely to benefit humanity as a whole, with a focus on the Himalayan region and beyond, unconstrained by a need to generate immediate financial return. Since our research is free from traditional financial obligations, we can focus entirely on creating a positive human impact.
We believe AI should be an extension of individual human wills and, in the spirit of liberty, as broadly and evenly distributed as possible. The outcome of this venture is uncertain, and the work is difficult, but we believe the goal and the structure are right. We hope this is what matters most to the best minds in the field.
Background
Artificial intelligence has always been a surprising field. Early AI research focused on solving specific tasks, such as playing games or performing symbolic reasoning, in the hope that solving them would lead to human-level intelligence. However, these solutions were task-specific and did not generalize in the ways people expected.
The past few years have brought another kind of surprise. Deep learning, a technique explored for decades, started achieving state-of-the-art results across a wide range of domains. Instead of hand-crafting solutions for each problem, deep learning architectures can adapt to new tasks based on the data they receive. This has led to breakthroughs in natural language understanding, computer vision, and speech recognition.
We have also begun to glimpse what AI might be capable of beyond narrow tasks: creativity, reasoning, and understanding complex patterns. SAGEA’s research aims to explore these possibilities while grounding AI systems in the cultural, linguistic, and social context of the Himalayan region.
Looking Forward
AI systems today are powerful but limited. Over time, these constraints are likely to diminish, eventually reaching human-level performance across most intellectual tasks. The potential benefits are enormous, but so are the risks if AI is built or used incorrectly. SAGEA’s mission is to ensure that these technologies are developed safely and for the benefit of all humanity.

Because the trajectory of AI is uncertain, it is important to have a leading research institution that prioritizes the long-term good over short-term gain. SAGEA was founded to be that institution. We are a research-first company committed to transparency, collaboration, and ethical innovation.
Our founders are Basab Jha (CEO), Ujjwal Puri (CTO), and Firoj Paudel (Chief Research Officer). Basab leads the company’s strategy and AI vision. Ujjwal heads the technical and research engineering efforts. Firoj directs the development of our reasoning and experimental AI models. Together, they combine world-class research expertise with a focus on creating safe and beneficial AI systems.
SAGEA’s approach is to openly share knowledge through papers, blog posts, code, and research tools. Our work is intended to support the global AI community, enabling others to build on it while advancing the goal of human-level AI that benefits everyone.
We are building foundational models for language, vision, and voice that are regionally aware and contextually relevant. By doing so, we aim to ensure that advanced AI systems understand and respect the people and cultures they interact with, starting in Nepal and extending globally.
